About the artwork:
Designed by Kamilya White, the Western Bulldogs' Sir Doug Nicholls Round guernsey for 2025 celebrates the club’s reconciliation journey, honouring First Nations players and their teammates. The design prominently features a meeting place symbol, signifying the club as a gathering point for the five Western Bulldogs AFL/AFLW First Nations players. This symbol is central to the guernsey's design, which imitates a map layout, moving from Tasmania (bottom red), Victoria (bottom white), South Western Australia (mid blue), North Western Australia (upper red), to Central Australia (upper white). Each section represents the Country of the First Nations players and the significant people who have supported them throughout each of their journeys.Â
For Ryley Sanders, representing the Palawa people of Tasmania, wombat tracks signify his totem. Nine tracks denote Rhyley’s playing number, while a ‘woman’ symbol pays tribute to the important role of his mother. Â
In the sections for Jamarra Ugle-Hagan (Gunditjmara, Victoria) and Arthur Jones (Noongar, Great Southern Western Australia), the shared totem of the red-tailed black cockatoo is depicted. Jamarra has two cockatoo prints indicating his playing number and symbols chosen to honour his four brothers and sister.
Arthur’s section features 32 cockatoo prints signifying his playing number, alongside his Yamatji totem, the black bream, with symbols to credit his parents and three sisters.Â
Liam Jones’ Kija Country of the Kimberley Region in Western Australia, is depicted with the Bungle Bungles. His totem, the red kangaroo, is shown with 19 tracks marking his playing number. Seven ‘women’ symbols pay tribute to his mother, two grandmothers, two sisters, partner, and daughter. Â
For Naomi Ferres, representing the Eastern Arrernte people of Eastern Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, the rock wallaby symbolizes her totem. The red circle represents the country’s ‘red centre’, with sixteen wallaby tracks acknowledging her playing number. Three joined ‘women’ symbols honour her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and the special inter-generational connection they share.Â
The right aspect of the guernsey features 132 ‘people’ symbols representing the total number of AFL, AFLW, and VFL players, with six red symbols highlighting the First Nations players. Surrounding these are 100 white dots, commemorating 100 years of the Western Bulldogs Football Club. This guernsey not only highlights the unique heritage and contributions of the First Nations players but also underscores the club's ongoing commitment to reconciliation and inclusion.Â
