2016 Match Worn Indigenous Guernsey - #17 Boyd

The 2016 Western Bulldogs Indigenous Guernsey has been designed by the 'The Pitcha Makin Fellas', a Ballarat based group of Indigenous artists, known for their passion about culture and the community. As a group they all contribute to making the pictures; it is a true collaboration of ideas and methods and everyone is treated with respect. The Fellas laugh a lot in the studio and believe that humour is an important ingredient in the recipe for good art, but it doesnÍt mean that all the work is light and fluffy. They are serious about what they do.

The figure in the centre of the Guernsey known as the Great Black Pointer is a reference to a traditional figure in the history of the Indigenous people. This Great Black Pointer is pointing the way for us and others, giving direction and showing a path to follow: open your eyes and see what is around you but also remember the past and what is important. It is also a reference to the courageous people in our community who stand against injustice. The boomerang in the chest of the figure is a reference to the traditional ways of the Indigenous community and for this Guernsey; the boomerang has been painted in traditional Bulldogs colours of Red, White and Blue.

The pattern in the background of the Guernsey is from a Pitcha Makin Fellas painting called 'Blackmanland- The Fellas Coat of Arms' which embraces their strong sense of themselves and their country. It's a play on any official insignia used to 'authenticate' and validate one group at the expense of another. The design features the Golden Wattle and the big blue of the Australian sky.

The artwork that has been used to design this Indigenous Guernsey is on exhibition at Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre at the Melbourne Museum until June 26.

All Guernseys will be signed by the respective player and packaged in a limited edition tube.

*Please note - Only the players that participate in the Round 10 game against Collingwood will be Match Worn*
